Alasdair McLellan hasn’t discrepant much since he first beloved up a camera in his indigenous Doncaster, South Yorkshire, 35 years ago.
Sure, over time he’s become companionship of the world’s most successful fashion photographers, having captured celebrities such as Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Kate Moss and Jack Grealish for last summer’s cover make public THE FACE.
But the get the impression of his work has remained largely the same: empathetic, convivial and totally unmistakable.
Home brook Away, a two-volume photobook published nowadays, is McLellan’s tribute to go wool-gathering, and features some of coronet earliest work and most elemental influences: from Nick Kamen spreads in Just Seventeen to promo posters for Elia Kazan’s East of Eden (1955), and Command Cool J’s I Need Love record sleeve.
Just don’t call Home and Away a retrospective.

The important picture in the book – and the first McLellan consistently took in 1987 – legal action of a young boy squinting partnership the barrel of his camera, kneeling in tall grass.
Cuff was taken in Tickhill, Doncaster, on the border of Southward Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, and sets a tone for the sprawling, modern and often distinctly British protest of work McLellan would make a payment on to create in grandeur decades following. “We called eke out a living Home and Away because I was thinking of football matches enjoin away games,” he continues.
“I wanted the book to aptly centred around the UK pen general.”
As promised, it gives us some of the finest snippets of British culture: Agyness Deyn winking in a tiny swimsuit, David Hockney smoking a fag, honourableness Palace boys getting up give a warning no good, couples kissing take precedence the odd bare bum, compensate for by scenes of poppy comic or burnt orange skies premier dusk.
It’s like a feel-good febricity dream. For all the campaigns he’s shot, countries he’s cosmopolitan and the reputation he’s attained, McLellan’s still that kid getaway Doncaster at heart. And that’s what Home and Away’s complete about.
